Gatland chaired a record of 14 consecutive tests of test match, with the defeat of Guinness Six Nations on Saturday in Italy La Paille Final.
Here, the AD news agency examines some of the suitors possible to take over.
Franco Smith
South African with a quiet voice has Welsh connections, having played for Newport during a career that also saw him winning nine ceilings for Springboks.
Former head coach of Italy, he was a considerable success in his current role at Glasgow, who was highlighted when they won the title of champion of Rugby United last season after an astonishing victory on the Bulls in South Africa.
An impressive man-manager, his approach could be exactly what the Welsh Rugby Union needs such testing time on and off the field.
Simon Easterby
Easterby is currently in Andy Farrell as a boss of Ireland while the latter takes care of the Lions for this summer tour in Australia.
The former Flanker of Ireland has been a defense coach under Farrell since 2021, after having played as an attacker’s coach, and supervised the start of 100% of the team in the six nations of this season.
The 49 -year -old has strong Welsh ties, after being a captain, then continued to train Scarlets during a long association with the region.
Michael Cheika

The 57-year-old Australian No-Nonsense has an impressive assessment, leading his native nation to the 2015 World Cup final, then reaching the semi-finals of the 2023 World Cup with Argentina.
Former rugby world coach of the year, Cheika is the only coach to have won major club competitions in each hemisphere – with Leinster (European Cup) and New Wales Waratah (Super Rugby).
He is currently in charge of the Gallagher Premiรจrester team, but should leave at the end of the season after having decided not to extend his contract.
Shaun Edwards
It is always a mystery for many how Lancastrien Edwards – one of the most decorated players in the history of the rugby league – was lost against Welsh rugby in 2019.
As a Wales Defense coach during the first spell of Gatland, he had an enormous influence on this era and became a world leader in his specialized field.
Edwards took the reins as a defense coach in France in 2020, and his impressive portfolio includes a coaching role during the British and Irish lions tour in 2009 in South Africa. It would be a daring, but also popular choice.
Steve Tandy
The current Defense coach of Scotland is among the favorites of bookmakers to succeed Gatland.
Although the 45-year-old Welshman was never an international head coach, he impressed in various roles.
Welsh region Les Ospreys were crowned with the winners of the Pro12 title with Tandy in charge and he did exceptional work with Scotland as a key member of the Gregor Townsend team of coaches, which was recognized when Gatland L ‘was responsible for the defense for the Tournรฉe des Lions 2021 from South Africa in 2021. It cannot be reduced.
Matt Sherratt
Cardiff Sherrattโs head coach will take care of the three remaining games in Wales against the favorites of the Ireland, Scotland and England.
Sherratt became Cardiff Boss in 2023, but was also an attack coach and trained in oscreys, Bristol and Worcester.
Sherratt will return to Cardiff after the six nations but, if he supervises a resumption of fortunes, could well be among the contenders. “Our intention is to have a permanent appointment in place before the two summer test tour in Japan, with all the open options,” the WRU said in a statement.
