“It was great,” said Thompson. “I felt like I was putting myself in good position on the TEE. I went well at the start, I sorted out on the nine before. It was a kind of roller coaster on the nine rear.
“Finished strong … Tapping for Birdie at 18 is still good.”
Thompson, who only needed 23 putts in his round, seeks his second PGA title after winning the classic John Deere last July.
“This course is a little more difficult than where John Deere is,” said Thompson. “I drive it well. I have to use my driver. I hope I can put myself in a good position.”
Scheffler, whose start of the season was delayed by an injury in the right hand, pulled a 67 with three birdies and an eagle despite five of the 14 fairways in his sleeve. He reached 13 of the 18 green regulations and finished Bogey Libre.
“Much of this was missing on the right sides,” said Scheffler. “It is part of listening to rust because of being injured and that the short game continues to improve while I start playing more.
“It was really good to have a day when I felt like I did not play golf flawless but the dashboard was clean.”
The night leader Denny McCarthy pulled 70 to take third on 138, a blow in front of McILroy, a winner, a winner in Pebble Beach, who pulled a 67.
“I played well,” said McILroy. “I’m in a good place for the weekend.”

In the sixth by 5, Scheffler came out of a Greenside bunker for Eagle.
“I am quite satisfied with the way I have marked,” he said. “I was often out of position, but I did a good job to muscle shots up there on the green and get up and go down when I also needed it.”
