The organizers of British Open announced on Monday that they offered a direct path for golf players to qualify for this year’s major at Royal Portrush, after a similar decision by the US Open.

The best placed player who is not already exempt in the first five in the individual ranking of the Saudi series, after the completion of the Liv Dallas event in June, will receive the spot.

Last week, the US Golf Association announced that the US Open, which took place at the Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania from June 12 to 15, offered an exemption to a leading LIV player and R&A, who organizes the British Open, followed out.

“The Open is a global championship for the best male golfers and each year we review our exemptions to make sure that we offer championship roads on the basis of the results obtained during the main professional tours,” said the Director General of R&A Mark Darbon.

“We recognize that players in competition in LIV golf should also have the possibility of obtaining outdoor places thanks to its individual rankings as well as existing tracks.”

There are various other categories of exemption for British open, in particular those linked to previous major winners and another linked to world rankings.

LIV players do not win the world classification points, severely restricting their chances of qualifying for the four major golf tournaments – Masters, US Open, British Open and PGA Championship.

The CEO of Liv, Scott O’Neil, praised the move of R&A.

“Recognition that the competitors of the Liv Golf League and the International series will have the opportunity to play in the original Golf Major is a real testimony to the strength of the fields and the commitment of R&A to golf fans around the world, “he said.

The 153rd British Open takes place on the Dunluce Links course at the Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland from July 17 to 20.
