Eilish McColgan hopes that the organizers of the Commonwealth Games will have a redesign on the decision not to include the marathon of the athletics program for next year, but says that it wishes to compete in Glasgow anyway.
The Scot won the 10,000 m and gained bronze in 5000m in previous matches in Birmingham in 2022 and also participated in Glasgow 2014 in the steeple and says it will be “special” to compete again on the ground to home next summer.
McColgan, however, considers itself more as a road than the track athlete these days and will make its 26-thousand debut at the London TCS marathon in April.
This event was not included in the Glasgow 2026 games stripped, but McColgan hopes that it is not too late for the decision to be reversed.
She said, “It’s a shame there is no marathon there because I would have liked to have a marathon of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
“I know they said it was too expensive to close the roads, but I had hoped that there could be a kind of collaboration with the big Scottish race there.
“It would have been great for Scotland to have a kind of event there with the Commonwealth Games as part of this.
“I understand that there are difficulties. It is not as simple as saying: “We are going to overcome the race”. It takes a lot of resources and money. But that would be good if they collaborate with another brand, perhaps that we are already hosting shopping on the road.
“I am really interested in talking to the right people if that’s what it takes. I think there could be a solution around him in one way or another.
“But if there is none and that means that I have to go on the track, then you will probably see me on the track. I don’t want to miss an opportunity to be in Glasgow. It is very different in competition in Scotland and we do not have many opportunities to do so.
“In Glasgow 2014, the atmosphere was quite incredible. And even more in Birmingham because I was at the front and I won a medal. It will be the exceptional moment for me in all my career. Thus, Commonwealth Games mean a lot to me.
“I will be something special for me to be in Glasgow in competition. If I feel like I’m in good shape to do it, you will see me there. I would love to be there to a certain extent. And if that means making an appearance on the track, I could be convinced just for this event. »»
